     08:00 - 17:00

The April 8, 2024 Solar Eclipse is just around the corner, and Mo-Ranch is directly within the path of Totality. This means the eclipse will be visible for the longest amount of time right here in the Hill Country. A total solar eclipse is a true bucket list experience, a once-in-a-lifetime event that hasn’t occurred in this part of the country since 1878 and will not occur in the contiguous US again until 2044.

MoRanch not only offers prime viewing (with favorable history but not guaranteed weather) but also educational programs offered by NASA scientists and other experts.  Please see detail via tabs at the event schedule.

I first visited MoRanch with my church youth group fifty years ago and have loved this Hill Country oasis since. MoRanch offers clear water paddling on the lake formed by a small damn on river (near the headwater on the North Fork of the Guadalupe River).  In addition, we can experience Hill Country camping, hiking, the legendary three-story sled slide, beautiful stone buildings, historic mosaic tiled pool, and contemplative views.  Please look at the website for more information on MoRanch and a grounds map.

The clear, still waters are ideal for kayaking upstream to the small trickle rapids or practicing rescues/rolls in the upper or lower lake.  Also, Jeff Oxenford, an ACA Canoe Instructor Trainer Educator, will be my guest and available for canoe instruction.

The downside?  Like everything else related to the Eclipse, the experience is expensive.  However, it will not be crowded as MoRanch has limited access.  I reserved one cabin and four tent sites before they sold out.  The costs:

Event fee $ 250 per person  ($ 150 per child)
Campsite $   60 per campsite/night ($240) for up to 4
with $ 10 per person for up to 4 more
Food: Varies as folks can camp cook or eat at the cafe
Optional plan Daily Breakfast $10.50/Lunch $14.50/Dinner $17.50

Each person pays the $250 event fee ($150 child 4 to 12) plus a share of the “primitive” campsite fee. We have access to shelter and electricity via a group pavilion and a cabin. Bathroom/showevers are available near campsites and at the waterfront. As always, HASK members wear life jackets and file float plans while paddling.
Registration cancellations will be accepted until Monday, April 1, 2024 at 1:30 PM
