ACA L2/L3 River Canoe Instructor Update

riverJoin Jeff Oxenford and RiverCoast for an Instructor Certification Update for ACA Level 2 and 3 River Canoe on the San Marcos and/or Guadalupe Rivers in Central Texas.

Course Description:  This course is to update candidates currently certified as ACA Instructors as L2 or L3 River Canoe.  Note:  You must currently show up as an ACA L2 or L3 Canoe Instructor.  Issues?  Fix them before registering or contact Jeff or me for help.

Although we teach from a fun and continuous learning approach, ACA Instructor Candidates must meet the Instructor Criteria and Assessments to update (either during this workshop or subsequent check-off).

Jeff Oxenford is an ACA Level 4 Whitewater Canoe Instructor Trainer Educator. He has almost 40 years experience teaching canoeing at summer camps, for professional outfitters, through canoe clubs,  and privately.  He has work with paddlers at all levels from beginners to advanced paddlers.

Course Waivers: Please review in advance the ACA/RiverCoast waiver via CMS (above) as all paddlesports can be risky.  Please contact Lynne (see info below) if you have any questions or clarifications or trouble accessing any links or other information that you may need.  Please feel free to contact your legal counsel in advance before signing this waiver.

Course Dates:  All day Friday through Sunday October 16 – 17 – 18, 2026.  We will meet no later than 8:30 am on Friday and plan to conclude by 5:30 pm. Be ready to get on the water!  Note:Contact Jeff if you need to leave early on Sunday.

Course Location:  We begin each day at a rented house near Rio Vista on the San Marcos River (or other appropriate venue). Address will be available to participants after registering.

Course Venue: This primarily on-the-water course will be on the San Marcos River (including Rio Vista) or Guadalupe River.  Course conditions specifiy sections of rivers rated up to and including class I-II, where limited maneuvering in current is required to avoid obstacles. A rapid class includes rapids at the lower and upper ends of the difficulty range, designated “-“ and “+”  respectively.

Accommodations: San Marcos hosts many motels, RV, and tent camping in the area.  A favorite is Tom & Paula Goynes’ San Marcos River Retreat where Susan Eda’s group has a large campground reservated. Others have recommended the San Marcos River Resort (formerly Leisure Resort).  Note that boy scouts and church groups have booked the former and that Texas State University plays football on Thursday, October 15, so make reservations.
